Natural biological breakdown of plant and animal matter to form the organic portion of soil is happening all around us. Fallen trees and leaves, dead plants and animals, are decomposed over a period of time through the work of microorganisms and larger soil fauna such as earthworms and insects. When this occurs, nutrients that were once part of the living plant or animal are returned to the soil for use by new plants. This process is a natural cycle that allows nature to rejuvenate itself.

How Compost is Made
Composting is the replication of the natural decomposition in which humans manipulate environmental conditions to optimize and speed the breakdown process.
